An estimated 20 percent of Americans have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons (Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse). New efforts continue to be put forward in Ohio to prevent prescription drug abuse and misuse.
A new piece of legislation from the Ohio House of Representatives, House Bill 373, was just introduced in November 2011 that addresses reducing the access of potentially abusing prescription drugs. Under the bill, the State Board of Pharmacy would be required to create a list of opioid drugs which are sold with tamper resistant caps. The measure would prohibit a pharmacist from substituting another drug unless the substituted substance is also tamper resistant.
