Each February, the Community Anti Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) holds its annual National Leadership Forum in Washington, DC. This year, the forum will be held from February 6-9 at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center. The Forum is a four-day event packed with multiple opportunities to learn the latest strategies to fight substance abuse and hear from nationally-known experts and policymakers. The Forum brings together more than 2,500 participants representing community anti-drug coalitions from all regions of the country, government leaders, youth, addiction treatment professionals, researchers, educators, law enforcement professionals and faith-based leaders.
I, along with Community Coordinator Amanda Conn Starner, attended this year on behalf of the Coalition. We had the tremendous opportunity to personally meet and discuss drug prevention issues with Ohio's Congressional delegation. Additionally, it was an incredible chance to network first-hand with coalitions around the country to gain their insights into prevention strategies being utilized in their region.
On February 6, SAMHSA and CSAP held its 8th Annual Community Prevention Day. This provided a venue for participants to receive training and technical assistance specific to substance abuse prevention, as well as to network with other grantees and partners. Participants also had the opportunity to share experiences and information and take part in workshops to develop strategic organizational skills.
On February 8, Forum participants traveled to the Capitol building to inform legislators about the effectiveness of substance abuse prevention, education and treatment. This was an exceptional opportunity to tell members of Congress and/or their key staffers about coalition work, and what coalitions can accomplish in the community.
