Legalized Medical Marijuana Moving Forward in Ohio

Not one, but two medical marijuana amendments aimed at being added to the Ohio Constitution have just been approved by the Ohio Ballot Board.

On January 25, the Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment (OMCA) of 2012 was approved. The group's next step is to collect the 385,245 signatures of registered voters to qualify for the November 6 ballot this fall. It could appear as a single issue on the ballot.

There is a second measure related to legalizing marijuana as medicine that the Ballot Board also approved back in October- that one is called the Ohio Alternative Treatment Amendment which also needs signatures to place it as an issue on the Ohio ballot. According to The Columbus Dispatch, OMCA is primarily centered on a group of patients seeking pain relief for medical conditions. The Alternative Treatment Amendment is backed by the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws or NORMAL.

If you have not already read the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Association of Ohio (ADAPAO)/Drug Free Action Alliance (DFAA) policy statement against legalizing medical marijuana in Ohio or have not signed the endorsement form which accompanies the position statement, please visit http://www.drugfreecincinnati.org/node/436/edit?destination=admin%2Fcontent%2Fnode and pass along the documents so more Ohioans will have the opportunity to endorse the policy statement against a marijuana as medicine ballot initiative in Ohio.
